Regular weekly rides

Regular Weekly Rides

The Clubs weekly social rides, centre around our Sunday morning group outings.  Some weeks we have up to 20 riders, split across at least 2 to 3 ability levels, ranging from gentle to brisk. The beauty is that because these share the same mid-ride coffee stop, you can also choose for example to push yourself by going out fast but then come back at a bit more of a conversational pace allowing you to take in the scenery and get to know people better.

  • The Sunday rides are carefully planned out each week by the Club Ride Organiser(s).  It is not a perfect science but, with the benefit of 40 years of collective Club wisdom, we generally know how to find all the best hills and how to avoid them, also where to go when it’s wet and where to go when it’s blowing a westerly. Their special trick is to nearly always find a way to give you a tail wind coming home!

  • Ride with GPS links for the routes for the Sunday morning rides are sent out each week a couple of days in advance and for each of the Sunday groups there will also be a ride leader whose job is to help guide everyone round and get people home safe. Riding in a group can be great fun and provided a few simple guidelines are followed it should also generally be safer than riding by yourself. To support the safe and enjoyable riding of everyone in the club, we have developed some simple guidelines for both group ride participants and for group ride leaders link to guidelines.  Based on national best practice we ask all new riders to familiarise themselves with these before riding with the club for the first time.

  • Every Sunday throughout the year we try to run at least two groups, if in the depths of winter there ever isn't enough, we ride as one. There is of course always a cafe stop and we try to plan the 2 routes so that both groups arrive at this about the same time. We will post links to the routes a couple of days in advance, it is only in extreme circumstances that a Sunday ride doesn't go ahead so if nothing is posted in advance it's still worth turning up.

In addition to our Sunday groups there is also a regular group which goes out every Thursday morning. This is also usually well attended but traditionally is not planned in advance with routes being decided on the day based on weather conditions and a quick consensus.

New for 2024 as detailed below there will now also be a regular once a month Saturday ride.  At 20 miles long this will be much shorter and more gentle than traditional club rides.  Although aimed primarily at giving non members a nice first step to group riding club members are very welcome to also come along.

For those who have never cycled in a group before, it can take a bit of time to get used to and requires a reasonable level of both underlying fitness and bike handling skills. We are keen to encourage new people into the club and are happy to provide a bit of help, if necessary, to bridge the gap. This could for example be by pairing people up with a more experienced rider for their first few rides. Alternatively, for those who prefer to first do some rides on their own we are always happy to advise on some great local routes which you might want to try to start with.

Sundays

Start: 9am from Ludlow Leisure Centre (unless otherwise advised)

Distance and difficulty: 45 to 55 miles with normal levels of Shropshire hilliness (which is generally quite a lot).  One common coffee shop destination for all groups but with the faster groups getting there by means of a slightly longer and more hilly route

o   Gentle: 13.5 to 14.5mph and circa 48 miles (no one gets left behind)

o   Moderate: up to 16.5mph and 55 miles

o   Brisk: up to 18 mph and 55 miles

Leadership and navigation: Group leaders assigned to each group and responsible for getting everyone home safe.  Planned routes with Ride with GPS link sent out to all members beforehand.

Thursdays

Start: 9.30am from Ludlow Eco Business Park (unless otherwise advised)

Distance and difficulty: 50 miles with about 2500 feet of climbing

Leadership and navigation: Route informally agreed at start based on who turns up and which way the wind is blowing. There will sometimes be more than one group and whilst there is less formal leadership on Thursday rides, there will always be someone who thinks they know where you are going. The Club’s best practice group cycling guidelines still apply and there will also nearly always be a coffee stop.

New for 2024 - Ludlow Easy Pedallers, Saturday Rides

A once a month more relaxed ride taking place on the 3rd Saturday of every month (March 16, April 20, May 18, June 15, July 20, Aug 17, Sept 14, Oct19). Lots of chit chat without the need for too much huff puff.

As a guide, for our initial pilot ride on March the 16th (photo above), we had a total of 20 riders taking part. The ride lasted just under 2 hours with some tea and biscuits at the finish line courtesy of Pearce Cycles. We ended up staying together as a single group covering the 20 miles at an average speed of just under 12mph. This seemed to work very well for everyone on the day but depending on numbers and make up of future groups we may experiment in future with splitting into a couple of groups.

Start: 10am from Pearce Cycles, Fishmore Rd, Ludlow (click for additional Pearce Cycles location information)

Distance and difficulty: A 20 mile, gently paced led ride along the beautiful River Corve valley. Quiet undulating local lanes

Leadership and navigation: Regular predefined route. Open Event supported by experienced local club riders.

Participation information for non-members: Open to female and male cyclists with basic fitness & a roadworthy bike, (lycra not required!). Our Club insurance restricts us to adults, and 14 to 17 year olds with signed parental consent.  You can simply turn up on the day but please first double check our web or Facebook site as in extreme circumstances (weather) rides may need to be cancelled or postponed. For more information or to be added to the club’s email distribution list please email Charles, the club’s Ride Organiser on charles_1501@hotmail.com
