Membership Costs and Responsibilities

Membership costs and responsibilities

We want to continue to build and expand the Club to meet the needs of our local community.

Our Membership year runs from January 1st but people can join at any point. Membership costs are £10 per annum for everyone over 18 and £5 for juniors.

Whilst we very much welcome new members there are a few common-sense principles that are important for those joining the club to be aware of:

  • Like many clubs LCC requires all members to have valid personal liability cycling insurance. This not only protects you on all your rides if you are involved in a collision (e.g. with a vehicle or pedestrian) where you are found to be fully or partly at fault, but importantly also provides protection should any of us unfortunately cause damage to other riders when riding with them.  Both British Cycling and Cycling UK provide insurance cover as part of their package of membership benefits and, although members are welcome to use any insurance provider, most members have found that using one of these two organisations provides a very quick, easy and relatively low cost way to obtain an adequate level of cycling cover particularly coming as they do with a wider range of more general add on benefits for cyclists and support for the national cycling community.

  • As safety of all riders is paramount, all new members participating in Club events must adhere to our best practice, group riding guidelines. Also be prepared to follow whatever additional guidance may be found necessary from the person asked to lead a ride on a particular day. For the duration of the ride they are the Captain of the ship and their job is to get everyone home safe.

  • Appreciate that on our more social rides the pace of the group generally needs to be dictated by the slower riders. The group may split up on climbs but faster riders need to wait so that everyone can regroup at the top giving some additional time for the later arrivals to also catch their breath. The group will always wait and help if anyone has a mechanical.

  • On a more general note appreciate that first and foremost we are a club for those who love cycling. We all have our individual politics and subjects that we care deeply about but wherever these are potentially contentious they are generally best left at home.
